REALITY CHECK SIMULATION

The Reality Check Simulation is a project designed to help high school students better understand how a market economy works, how the economy affects them, and how income levels affect his or her spending decisions.

One class period represents one month and each student will be able to randomly pick a career in their field of interest. The career they choose comes with a monthly salary. This salary must then be spent on a house of their choice, a car of their choice and many other optional expenses such as groceries, entertainment, pets and many others. They will also be faced with an array of unexpected events that may either affect them positively or negatively.

During the simulation, the students will learn to budget their money and learn of the importance of saving and making smarter spending decisions.

One of our goals is to use the feedback we get from the students and teachers from our classroom visits in the fall to develop a larger scale seminar for the spring. Eventually, we would like to host students from all over Madison for a day of workshops focused on college life, personal finances, and real world problems.
